Skin Series
The Concept behind the Skin Series
The ‘Skin’ series is a body of work which focuses on the parallels between humans and nature. It shows how both endure through life, developing similar characteristics as they age. It is an observation on ageing, reflecting the passage of time and its inevitable marks.
The choice of clay as a medium to explore this relationship is not accidental. In the process of creating these pieces, clay has shown that like skin and bark, it is vulnerable to time and touch. This is readily shown in this series as marks, cracks and irregular features.
The work provides evidence of aesthetic evolution, as well as revealing persistence and susceptibility. Bark that cracks, wrinkles, and hardens shows survival and adaptation, unveiling a beauty that emerges from decay. In this context, the ceramic pieces are not merely decorative objects, they also form a narrative that transcends the traditional and classical values of beauty.
The ‘Skin’ series is not just a visual metaphor, it is an invitation to reflect on what it means to exist, to age, and ultimately to perish.
It may even question our own anxieties about mortality.
